Sun setting over a USA highway with cars on a road trip

America is a large place to test a small data plan. Google Maps on a road trip, airport transfers, ride apps, hotel logins, national-park routes, streaming and laptop hotspots all add up. Start with what you will do, then choose a Sim Local US plan that states the data, days, calls/SMS and network details you need.

Sim Local's own USA guide has shown a mix of plans, including Lycamobile options with calls and texts, Three roaming products, and data options using major US networks. That is useful as a starting point, not a permanent plan list. Open the current product card before buying because price, allowance and provider can change.

Coverage away from cities depends heavily on the network behind your chosen plan.

Does Sim Local use AT&T or Verizon in the USA?

Some current Sim Local US plan material has described selected unlimited and Smartroam products using AT&T and Verizon networks. That does not mean every US plan uses both networks. The network is a plan-level claim, and the right way to write this in content is: "check the exact plan card for the current network and coverage information."

This matters most away from cities. New York, Orlando and Los Angeles are not a fair test of an eSIM intended for long drives through national parks or smaller towns. No online plan can promise a perfect signal in every valley, highway or rural property. Download offline maps before leaving a city, keep your hotel address saved, and avoid making important arrival plans depend on one bar of mobile service.

How much USA travel data do you need?

For normal holiday use, 5–10 GB can be enough for maps, messaging, browsing, ride apps and a few photo uploads. Bump that number up if you will:

  • use a laptop hotspot;
  • watch video during long internal flights or train journeys;
  • upload Reels, TikToks or 4K photos;
  • navigate for several people;
  • make video calls without hotel Wi-Fi.

Unlimited plans can be useful, but read the fine print. Some use a daily high-speed amount before a speed-management rule applies. Others have separate tethering policies. "Unlimited" tells you less than "how much full-speed data can I use on a normal day?"

Data only or calls and texts?

Most travellers are fine with a data-only eSIM. WhatsApp, FaceTime, Google Meet, Signal and Skype all work through data. But a plan that includes calls and texts may be better if you need to ring a hotel, contact a local business, receive standard SMS or keep a separate US number for travel admin.

Sim Local's USA guide has listed both kinds of plans. Do not guess from the provider name. Open the selected card and look for calls, SMS, local number and hotspot labels.

Install the eSIM while you still have reliable Wi-Fi before your flight.

Install before you fly

Buy while you have Wi-Fi, then install near departure. The QR code is normally in the confirmation email or the Sim Local app. At arrival:

  1. Set the new line as your mobile-data line.
  2. Turn data roaming on for the travel eSIM if the instructions say to.
  3. Turn automatic data switching off.
  4. Allow a few minutes for the plan to register.

Many eSIM plans will not connect until they see a supported network at the destination. No service before your flight is not necessarily a fault.

Use our Sim Local setup guide for the device steps. If it still does not work after arrival, follow our Sim Local troubleshooting guide.

Three USA traveller profiles

The city-break traveller

For a long weekend in New York, Chicago, Miami or Las Vegas, prioritise simple activation and enough data for directions, reservations, rides and social posts. You probably do not need an enormous plan unless you use video heavily. Hotel Wi-Fi will carry much of the evening load.

The road-trip traveller

For California coast drives, Florida loops or a national-parks route, data is more about reliability than entertainment. Download offline maps for the areas between towns. Carry a car charger. Keep campground, motel and emergency numbers saved. A larger allowance is helpful, but it cannot replace local coverage in a remote area.

The work-and-hotspot traveller

If your laptop depends on the eSIM, check hotspot rules before you buy. Consider how much data video calls, downloads and cloud work actually use. A plan with a lower headline price can become expensive if it does not permit the tethering you need.

A simple US plan checklist

Before payment, answer these questions in order:

  • Is my plan valid for every day from arrival to departure?
  • Is the data amount enough for maps, messages and my realistic video use?
  • Does the plan card clearly state the current network or provider?
  • Do I need calls, SMS or a local number?
  • Is hotspot use permitted if I need a laptop?
  • Have I read the high-speed policy behind an unlimited label?

Final word

The best Sim Local USA eSIM is the one that matches your route and data habits. A city break needs less than a road trip, and a work trip needs more than a map-and-messages holiday. Choose the plan, check its current network terms, then apply ESIMADVICE.
