Buy online or at the airport?
For most eSIM-compatible travellers, buying online is the smoother move. You can check device compatibility, choose the country or regional plan, and save the installation details before leaving home. Gatwick
The Gatwick page lists North and South Terminal airside stores. That is handy for departing passengers, but "airside" matters. If you are arriving and cannot access the shop from your route, an online eSIM or another option may be faster.
Athens
Sim Local lists two Athens Airport locations: one near the arrivals hall by Exit 1 and one in the baggage hall opposite Belt 1. Its page says stores sell physical SIMs in standard sizes and eSIM options, with staff able to help activate a compatible eSIM. That is unusually useful if you are not comfortable changing mobile settings while jet-lagged.
Madrid
The Madrid page lists locations in the arrivals halls for Terminal 1 and Terminal 4. Check your exact arrival terminal; the airport is large enough that a "nearby" shop can become a long walk with luggage.
Physical SIM versus eSIM at the airport
Neither option is universally better. Pick the one that makes your first hour easier.

The no-drama arrival plan

- Keep mobile data on your home line until you reach the destination if the instructions say the travel eSIM will only connect there.

What to ask in an airport shop
- Which countries and networks does this exact plan cover?
- When does the validity period begin?
- Is this data-only, or does it include calls and texts?
- Is hotspot allowed on this plan?
- Can you help set the travel plan as my mobile-data line?
- What support route should I use if it stops working later?
Save a photo of the plan details and receipt. If you have a problem days later in a different city, that record is more useful than remembering what was said in a busy terminal.
Coupon versus airport counter price
