There is a small moment after landing when every traveller becomes a mobile-network engineer. The map will not load, the taxi driver is waiting, and you suddenly need to remember what "preferred SIM" means. Take a breath. Most eSIM problems are one missed setting, not a dead plan.

Do these five checks in order
1. Are you in the covered destination?
Many travel eSIMs will not connect while you are still at home or passing through a country outside the plan's coverage. Sim Local's own activation guide reminds customers that most plans will not connect until they reach their destination. Check the country list in the exact order confirmation — not a general marketing page — then try again after you have arrived.
2. Is Sim Local selected for mobile data?
On iPhone, go to Settings > Mobile Service/Cellular > Mobile Data and select the Sim Local line. On Samsung, open Settings > Connections > SIM manager, then choose the new eSIM under Mobile Data. Other Android phones usually use Settings > Network & internet > SIMs.
Give the line a name such as "Travel data." It sounds obvious, but it stops you choosing the wrong line in a hurry.
3. Is data roaming on for the travel line?
Yes, it often needs to be on. This setting lets your travel eSIM connect to the local partner network. Turn it on for the Sim Local line, not automatically for every line. Then wait a minute or two after changing it.
4. Is automatic data switching off?
This is the sneaky one. Sim Local's terms warn that automatic data switching can interfere with connectivity and can create unexpected roaming use. On iPhone, turn off Allow Cellular Data Switching. On Samsung, choose the Sim Local line for Mobile Data and turn off any switching setting you find. If you want your home SIM to receive texts, leave it active but prevent it from supplying data.
5. Have you restarted after the settings change?
Toggle airplane mode for around 20–30 seconds, then turn it off. If that does not help, restart the phone. Do not do ten changes at once. Make one change, wait, then check whether the data indicator returns.
The quick pre-flight checklist
If you are setting up before travel, ensure:
- The phone is eSIM-compatible and carrier-unlocked.
- Wi-Fi is stable while the eSIM downloads.
- You used the same email address to access the Sim Local app/order.
- You have not accidentally installed the plan twice.
- You know when the plan activates and when validity begins.
Sim Local offers three installation routes: One-Click download, QR scan and manual codes. One-Click is only offered for iOS 17.4 or later. If a camera app refuses to scan a QR code, use Add eSIM in the phone's settings and scan there, or use the manual details from the confirmation email/app.
For full first-time setup, read how to use a Sim Local eSIM. If your phone cannot add a plan at all, start with compatible Sim Local devices.
No signal versus signal but no internet
These are different problems.
No signal can mean you are outside coverage, the eSIM is turned off, it is not installed correctly, or the phone has not registered on a network yet. Check the plan coverage, turn the line on, restart, and allow a few minutes.
Signal but no internet usually points to the data-line choice, roaming setting, data switching, or an exhausted data allowance. Open the Sim Local app if available and review usage. Do not immediately start changing APN settings: only change an APN if the plan documentation or Sim Local support explicitly gives you one. Guessing an APN can make a working configuration worse.
iPhone-specific checks
On iPhone, make sure the Sim Local line is enabled in Settings > Mobile Service/Cellular. Set it under Mobile Data, switch data roaming on for that line, and turn off cellular data switching. If you see "Cannot Be Added," re-check Wi-Fi, carrier unlock and whether a previous installation attempt already added the plan to the SIM list.
Keep the QR code private. It is plan-specific. If it has already been used, do not keep re-scanning it — contact support with your order number instead.
Samsung and Android-specific checks
On Samsung, the useful place is Connections > SIM manager. Confirm the new eSIM is present, selected for Mobile Data, and has data roaming enabled. Sim Local's Android guide also suggests naming the plan, which makes later switching simpler.
On Pixel and other Android models, look for Network & internet > SIMs. Menu names can change with Android versions and manufacturer skins, so follow the labels rather than memorising a single path.
When to contact Sim Local support
Contact support after completing the basic checklist, especially if the eSIM cannot be added, will not activate in its covered destination, or has an error you can screenshot. Sim Local says customers can use the help centre, website chat/WhatsApp, email at customerqueries@simlocal.com, or submit a ticket. Its contact page says it aims to sort submitted tickets within 24 hours.
Send the support agent useful facts in the first message:
- Order number and purchase email.
- Device model and software version.
- Destination country and current network display.
- Screenshot of the error and SIM settings.
- Confirmation that data roaming is on for the Sim Local line and data switching is off.
Do not delete first, ask first
Deleting an eSIM can remove the information needed to reconnect, and a QR code may not be reusable. Sim Local's refund terms distinguish technical faults from user-caused setup problems, so keep the plan installed and take screenshots before making bigger changes. If there is a technical activation issue attributable to Sim Local or a network provider, the published policy describes a possible refund route; see Sim Local's refund policy explained.

Bottom line
Set Sim Local as the data line, enable data roaming on that line, stop automatic switching, then restart. If it still fails in the covered destination, document it and ask support before deleting anything.
The order of operations matters
It is tempting to change every phone setting at once. Resist it. Confirm the destination, data line, roaming setting and data-switching setting one by one, then restart. Note what changed and what happened. That short record helps you avoid loops and gives Sim Local support a clear starting point if escalation is needed. Most importantly, keep the eSIM in place until a support adviser tells you otherwise; removing it can take away the information needed to fix it.
While troubleshooting, use secure Wi-Fi where possible and avoid sharing order QR codes in public chats or screenshots. Treat the plan details like payment information. If data starts working, send a message or load a map before leaving Wi-Fi. That confirms actual mobile data, rather than a cached page, is working.
