That is the plain-English version. The useful version is a little more careful. Travel eSIMs are digital products, so the moment you install or activate one matters far more than it would with a jacket you can put back in a box. This guide helps you decide whether to buy now, install later, and what to do if a trip changes.
Sim Local discount for eligible eSIM plans: try ESIMADVICE for 10% off. If it is not accepted, ESIMDUDE10 and ESIMNINJA10 are 10% fallback codes. Use one code per order only; codes do not stack and the saving must appear at checkout.👉 Check eligible Sim Local plans
The rule that matters most: do not activate too early
Sim Local's published refund page says an unactivated eSIM can be returned for a full refund when the request is made within 14 days of purchase. Its terms also make clear why travellers should not test-install a plan casually: an activated eSIM is considered used and is normally not eligible for a refund.
That leads to a simple traveller rule: buy when the price and trip are firm, but only install when you are ready to follow the plan's activation guidance. Sim Local's current setup guide says to install shortly before departure or after landing, while its app guide suggests installing one day before the trip. Read the instructions in your order confirmation too, because a plan's validity and connection timing can vary.
Do not confuse downloading, installing, activating, and connecting. Those words are often used as if they mean the same thing. They do not always mean the same thing in mobile-plan terms. Your confirmation email and plan details are the final authority.
When a refund may still be possible after activation
There is an important technical-fault route. Sim Local's refund policy says it may refund an eSIM that cannot be activated because of a technical issue caused by Sim Local or the network provider, even after 14 days. The terms say technical network activation issues can qualify, subject to proof.
That is not a promise that every connection problem is refundable. A phone that is carrier-locked, an eSIM placed on the wrong data line, roaming left off, or a plan used outside its covered destination can look like a broken plan when it is really a settings issue. Start with our Sim Local eSIM not working checklist before requesting a refund. It saves a surprising number of airport-floor panics.
Situations that are usually not refundable
The most common non-refund situation is an activated plan that you no longer need because plans changed. Sim Local's terms also say user-caused setup or activation problems may not qualify for a refund. That is why it is worth checking three things before paying:
- Your phone is carrier-unlocked and eSIM-compatible.
- The plan covers the countries and dates on your actual itinerary.
- You understand whether the plan includes calls and texts, rather than assuming it does.
Use our compatible devices guide before you buy. For plan selection, use best Sim Local eSIM plans. Both are faster than trying to turn a refund policy into a trip-planning tool.
How to request a Sim Local refund
Keep the request tidy. Sim Local asks customers to contact customerqueries@simlocal.com with the order number and the email used for purchase; a short explanation helps. Its refund page says support aims to respond within one to two business days, and that an approved refund can take five to ten business days to appear, depending on the payment method and bank.
Here is the evidence I would gather before writing:
- Order confirmation and order number.
- The purchase email address.
- A screenshot of the plan status in the Sim Local app or phone settings.
- Screenshots of any error message and the date/time it appeared.
- Your device model, iOS/Android version and destination country.
- The steps already tried: data line selected, roaming enabled, network restart, and so on.
Keep the email factual. "The eSIM was never activated and I am within 14 days" is much easier for a support agent to assess than a long story about a cancelled holiday. If the plan will not activate, state that clearly and attach the error. Do not edit screenshots.
The price-match promise is different from a refund
Sim Local also publishes a Price Match Promise. It is not a coupon and it is not a universal "cheapest plan" guarantee. Under the published rules, the competing plan should be from a recognised retailer, last at least seven days, include more than 1GB, and be compared on price per GB. Sim Local asks for a screenshot of the other offer and says it aims to respond within 48 hours. If approved, its page says the difference is refunded and may take up to 10 working days.
That makes price match useful for an apples-to-apples comparison, not for comparing a 1GB weekend plan with a 30-day regional package that happens to have a smaller headline price. Read our Sim Local price-match guide before making a claim.
A practical pre-purchase checklist
Before you tap pay, take a minute for these questions:
- Is my flight and accommodation plan settled enough to buy now?
- Do I want a physical SIM from an airport store, or can my phone use an eSIM?
- Does my trip start in the destination where the plan is meant to connect?
- Have I saved the order email somewhere available offline?
- Have I entered ESIMADVICE and checked the price changed before completing payment?
This is not glamorous travel planning. Neither is discovering you have no map at 1am. The boring five minutes are worth it.

Bottom line
Buy a Sim Local plan when your trip is real, keep it unactivated until the recommended setup window, and save the order email. If something genuinely technical goes wrong, send support a clean evidence pack. That is the best way to protect both your money and your first day abroad.
One last traveller tip
If a purchase is important, take a screenshot of the final checkout screen showing the plan, price and any discount before you pay. Keep it with the confirmation email. This small record is useful for a refund question, a price-match conversation and your own trip budget. It also makes it easier to spot whether the code applied to the product you intended to buy. Read the live plan conditions once more before activation: destination coverage, validity and included services are more valuable than a saving on a plan that does not suit the trip.
If you bought through a partner link or used a code, that does not replace the provider's support route. Your order is still handled by Sim Local, so include the Sim Local order details in any request. Finally, never send card numbers or account passwords in a refund email. An order number, purchase email and relevant screenshots are enough for the first contact.
